My Setup
Here’s what I’m working with right now. It’s not perfect — my PC is dead and I’m borrowing my wife’s Mac Studio — but it gets the job done.
The Monitors
- Alienware AW3225QF — 32” 4K QD-OLED ultrawide. This is the main screen. Everything happens here.
- Dell U2515H — 25” 1440p. The trusty sidekick for terminals, docs, and Slack messages I’m ignoring.
The KVM
A USB-C KVM switch lets me flip between my office laptop and personal machine with one button press. Both share the same monitors, keyboard, and mouse. No cable swapping, no second desk. It’s the kind of thing that sounds boring until you don’t have one.
The “PC”
My actual PC is currently broken, so I’m on my wife’s Mac Studio. She’s been very patient about this. I should probably fix my PC. I will not be fixing my PC until RAM prices calm down. So, never.
The Server
An Unraid server handles everything I don’t want running on my daily machine:
- Immich — self-hosted Google Photos replacement. All our photos, no cloud dependency.
- Home Assistant — smart home automation. Lights, sensors, the usual.
- SWAG — reverse proxy for all the services, including this very website.
- This blog — built with Astro, pulled and deployed automatically via a cron job.
The server is the real MVP. It runs 24/7, rarely complains, and doesn’t need its wife’s permission to exist.
The Workflow
Office laptop for work. Mac Studio for everything else. KVM to switch between them without moving. Unraid to host anything worth keeping. AI tools to write the code I’m too lazy to write myself.
It’s a good setup. When I get my PC back, it’ll be even better. Probably.
