Opus 4.7 Is a Gas Guzzler
Revision counter: I asked Claude to fix this post 1 time before it got the details right. Peak AI experience.

Opus 4.7 dropped. I burned through a month of credits in 2 days. Didn’t even get to properly test it.
The Numbers
From what I managed to see before my credits evaporated, Opus 4.7 High consumes roughly 1.2x to 1.5x more than base Opus 4.6. That’s not a small bump. That’s “open your billing page and close your laptop” territory.
Is it better? Couldn’t tell you. I ran out of credits before I could find out. Budget’s tight and Anthropic isn’t handing out refunds.
The Tier Thing
What I really don’t get is the medium / high / low / xhigh tier system. Wasn’t the whole point of having Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus that you pick the model that fits your use case? Now I’m picking a model AND a power level? It feels like ordering coffee — just give me the thing, I don’t need to configure it.
Pick a model. Pick a tier within the model. Hope you picked the right combination. Get billed differently for each. Cool system, very intuitive.
